Why Check-Ins Matter

Whether you’re feeling balanced and steady, or a little off-kilter, regular wellbeing check-ins matter. When things are going well, it’s easy to forget what actually helps us stay well. Yet you don’t have to be at rock bottom to begin seeking support. Awareness of our emotions, thoughts, and feelings is key to staying in balance.

Life Can Stretch Us All

You also don’t have to be living or working in high-pressure professional environments, driven by performance, deadlines, and outcomes, to feel stretched. Parenting and caring bring their own demands. Juggling finances, work commitments, school deadlines, parents’ evenings, after-school clubs, and the ongoing task of holding boundaries while keeping children on side can be exhausting. All of this will stretch anyone at times.

At its heart, wellbeing is about connection and communication with ourselves.

Why We Wait Until Crisis

When life feels manageable, we can easily overlook the habits and boundaries that help us stay balanced. This is why regular wellbeing check-ins are essential, not optional. Yet the busyness of life often pulls us away from ourselves. We become reactive, focused on deadlines and responsibilities, and we only pause to seek support once we feel overwhelmed and unsure which way to turn.

Support Isn’t Just for Crisis

Seeking support isn’t only for moments of crisis. Checking in with yourself is for everyone. The earlier you notice feeling off balance or unsteady, the sooner you can regain your footing and return to your own sense of normal.

Reflection time to see the light for positive change and move away from worry, anxiety and stress

A Gentle Pause for Reflection

Take a moment now, if you can. Allow your attention to gently turn inward.
Notice how you feel in your body today. Is there a sense of steadiness, tension, or tiredness?
Without judgement, ask yourself: What do I need more of right now?
There’s no right answer. Simply noticing is enough.

The Cost of Ignoring Imbalance

When imbalance is left unaddressed, life can start to feel edgier and more uncertain. Worry can turn into persistent stress or anxiety. Feelings of overwhelm may slowly creep in. These complex emotions, thoughts, and physical responses can begin to affect all areas of our lives.
But it doesn’t have to be this way.

What Check-Ins Can Do

When we take time to check in with ourselves:

  • We gain a clearer understanding of what supports us at our best, and can draw on those strategies during more challenging periods.

  • We recognise earlier when we’re out of balance and can take intentional steps to return to our own sense of equilibrium.

Why We Ignore Ourselves

Too often, we only pause to reflect once we’ve been feeling persistently stressed, anxious, emotionally drained, or tearful.

Why does this happen?
We stay busy.
We push through.
We normalise exhaustion.

Sometimes we avoid looking too closely because we sense that change, or difficult conversations, may be required. In these moments, we can feel as though we’ve lost our “normal”.

Understanding Your Spiral of Change

Everyone’s normal is different. Any internal shift will be experienced in a unique way by each of us. I often describe this as a spiral of change. We move up and down depending on our mindset, our wellbeing, and the level of pressure or support present in our professional and personal lives.

When we begin to feel unlike ourselves, disengaged, anxious, irritable, or low in energy, we may already be moving down that spiral of imbalance. The longer these patterns persist, the more effort it can take to move back up the spiral and regain our sense of balance.
